Finland promoting its project "100 Acts for Gender Equality" in Croatia

ZAGREB, June 13 (Hina) - As a part of the centenary of Finland’s independence in 2017, the Embassy of Finland in Zagreb with the Croatian Governmental Office for Gender Equality and the Parliamentary Committee on Gender Equality have initiated a project called "100 Acts for Gender Equality in Croatia."

The aim of the initiative is to collect 100 acts that enhance gender equality within the Croatian society, it was said presenting the campaign in Zagreb's Kaptol Centre.

Various organisations have been invited to participate in the project - public institutions, companies, municipalities, nongovernmental organisations, sports clubs, education institutions, the media and labour organisations.

All the works will be published on www.finland.hr and in the public via social media.

Acting head of the Croatian Government Gender Equality Office, Helena Stimac Radin said that the latest report by the European Commission indicates the slowness of progress in the area of gender equality however, Croatia is not that bad in that ranking.

"The portion of women in parliament (19%) is a somewhat lower than the EU average (26%). However, in enterprise that is about one-third who are women, which is the same in Finland. As far as education is concerned, we are following the European trend where young women are more educated than their male counterparts and a good example of this is in the judiciary where 70% are women. Apart from low participation of women in politics, women are underpaid because on average their salaries are 11% lower than that of men," Stimac Radin said.

Finland's Ambassador to Croatia Timo Rajakangas underscored that gender equality is a fundamental value in Finland and among the essential reasons for the country's success over the past 100 years. In that time, the country has developed from one of the poorest in Europe to becoming one of the most prosperous and is ranked near the very top of the scale of the international social and economic ladder.
