Hanukkah marked by menorah lighting in Zagreb's Main Square

ZAGREB, Dec 31 (Hina) - A ceremony of menorah lighting in Zagreb's Main Square on Saturday evening was held to celebrate this year's eight-day Hanukkah holiday in Croatia, with the president of the Jewish organisation "Menora", Rabbi Pinhas Zaklos, and Mayor Milan Bandic kindling together the eight lights.

The Hanukkah lights on a nine-branched menorah, or 'Hannukah candelabrum', are kindled every night of Hanukkah (Chanukah).

Rabbi Zaklos extended best wishes on this Jewish festival also known as the Festival of Lights. and expressed satisfaction that the menorah lighting had been held in the central square of the Croatian capital.

He went on to say that everybody could feel safe and comfortable in the city.

The mayor recalls that the ceremony of menorah lighting has been held for ten years in Zagreb's Jelacic Square.

Bandic boasted that being a multi-ethnic and multi-religious city, Zagreb could serve as a model to other European and global cities.

Hanukkah, this Jewish holiday, begins on the 25th day of Kislev – the ninth month of the ecclesiastical year on the Hebrew calendar – and is celebrated for eight days. This year, Hanukkah began on the evening of Saturday December 24th and ends on the evening of Sunday January 1st.
