The festival, to last nine days, will feature about 100 films.
At the opening ceremony, the cinema's representatives were presented with the best film programme award of the European cinema network Europa Cinemas.
Attending the ceremony were numerous guests, including Culture Minister Nina Obuljen Korzinek.
This year, 12 films are competing in the festival's main feature film programme, and four of them are Croatian productions or co-productions.
Those films are "Ne gledaj mi u pijat" (Quit Staring at My Plate) by Hana Jusic, "Trampolin" (The Trampoline) by Katarina Zrinka Matijevic, and the minority Croatian co-productions - the Macedonian film "Oslobodjenje Skopja" (The Liberation of Skopje) by Rade and Danilo Serbedzija, and the Georgian film "House of Others" by Rusudan Glurjidze. All the films are candidates of their respective countries of origin for Academy Awards.
The films to be shown in the festival's main programme range from comedy to drama, and there is also a large number of thrillers, such as "Nocturnal Animals" by fashion designer Tom Ford, "Dogs" by Romanian director Bogdan Mirica, "Flemish Heaven" by Peter Monsaert and "Old Stone" by Chinese-Canadian director Johhny Ma.
The festival features numerous other programmes, including one intended for children.
The festival venues are the Europa and Tuskanac cinemas, the Museum of Contemporary Art, Dokukino KIC, F22-Nova akademska scena, and Goethe Institute.
