Since its inception, the Zagreb Film Festival has focused on the presentation and promotion of debut films and new filmmakers.
This year, young Croatian director Hana Jusic will be promoted with her "Quit Staring at My Plate".
Also screened will be "Sieranevada" by Romanian film director and screenwriter Cristi Puiu and "House of Others" by Rusudan Glurjidze, Georgia's candidate in the Foreign Language category at the 89th Academy Awards.
Taika Waititi, a New Zealand film director and actor, will be at the festival with his "Hunt for the Wilderpeople".
The aim of the festival "is to get the Croatian audience acquainted with new film directors and their first or second films, and to organise creative meetings with international and local film artists and professionals. The festival thus aims to make a positive impact on the improvement of Croatian film production and culture," according to information on the festival's website.
The films will be competing for the festival's main award, Golden Pram.
The main competition programme has three categories: debut (first or second) films by directors in the International Feature Film category, debut (first or second) films by directors in the International Short Film category, and short films of new Croatian directors in the Checkers program.
The best authors in every category will also receive a financial award.
