Croatian, Lithuanian presidents support energy independence

ZAGREB, June 29 (Hina) - Energy independence is very important and Croatia can learn a lot about it from Lithuania, presidents Kolinda Grabar-Kitarovic of Croatia and Dalia Grybauskaite of Lithuania said in Zagreb on Monday.

Crises in Europe's east can affect security, so energy independence is imperative, Grabar-Kitarovic told a joint news conference, adding that energy sources and transport routes should be diversified.

The infrastructure should be connected so that we can help each other and so that the European Union is much less dependent on energy sources from unstable areas, she said, pushing for Mediterranean-Baltic cooperation in energy.

Lithuania has achieved full energy independence over the past eight years, including through a floating liquefied gas terminal anchored in Klaipeda since October 2014.

The terminal has been rented from the Norwegian Hoegh LNG company, which means that Moscow can no longer manipulate gas prices to exert political pressure on Lithuania, an EU and NATO member, said Grybauskaite.

Because Russia blackmailed, us we paid fuels 40 percent more than Germany, and now the price has fallen considerably, she added.

Eight years ago, Lithuania was totally dependent on Russian gas and oil and today it is totally independent in terms of gas and will be independent in electricity production as of December, which has been achieved by its own investments, the Lithuanian president said.

One should not wait for financing from abroad, one should invest, which is how political independence is achieved too, she said.

Croatia and Lithuania are geographically distant but historically similar, they are both members of the EU and NATO and the only ones in the EU with a female president, she said.

She added that Lithuania would learn from the Croatian-Slovenian example of partnership in the management of a nuclear plant (Krsko).

Grybauskaite is also to be received by Croatian Prime Minister Zoran Milanovic.
