President publishes text on her first 100 days in office

ZAGREB, May 30 (Hina) - On the occasion of her first 100 days in office, Croatian President Kolinda Grabar-Kitarovic has posted on her web site a text in which she says that she is encouraged by reactions from citizens from all over the country and speaks of home and foreign policies and economic challenges, and announces that she has appointed former prime minister Nikica Valentic her special advisor on economic affairs.

"It is frequently alleged that I implement the platform of one political party, which is simply not true. I am implementing what I promised in my platform. Citizens elected me to implement it and I will do it wholeheartedly," Grabar-Kitarovic says in the text.

"In my first 100 days in office... I truly wanted to establish cooperation with the Croatian government on strategic national issues. I am always interested in dialogue and ready for it. As President of the Republic, I am more focused on medium and long-term goals, not on short-term or election goals. I want to have professional and correct relations with all parliamentary parties' leaders, even if we do not share the same views or worldviews."

Noting that in the first 100 days in office she carefully analysed models and results of economic councils appointed by her predecessors, Grabar-Kitarovic says that she has appointed former prime minister Nikica Valentic her special advisor on economic affairs. During Valentic's term in office "the inflation was stopped, the exchange rate was stabilised and the kuna was introduced. I believe his extensive experience and reputation will help in analysing the overall economic situation and possible solutions."

"As for the Economic Council, I have an entirely different approach to it than my predecessors. The Council will consist of the leading people of important economic institutions because I wanted to create a circle of institutions to consult with on specific topics from the field of their competence... Institutions have been neglected for quite some time... and professionals are rarely listened to... It is of the utmost importance to create a synergy between the academic and business communities so as to encourage research and development, investment in new technologies and innovation," the president says.

"Eradicating poverty and unemployment, enabling pensioners to live in dignity and providing appropriate care for all those in need, as well as creating an environment that will encourage young people to stay in Croatia and start a family here, are only some of the challenges our generation has to answer to for the sake of generations to come," Grabar-Kitarovic says, noting that she is encouraged to have opened dialogue on these topic with parliamentary parties and other key social actors.

As for her foreign political activities, the president says that she has started implementing a more assertive and dynamic foreign policy within the EU and NATO.

"Croatia's foreign policy should be recognisable by its principles, primarily the values which it is based on and which it advocates. My visit to Gdansk is a clear confirmation of such an approach. The event brought together the leading people of friendly, important central European and Baltic countries... and it clearly emphasised the importance of the end of World War II as well as of the fall of Communism, events that still strongly reflect on Croatia's present and drain its society of energy."

"I see the Adriatic-Baltic vertical as an important engine of the further growth of the European project. In those countries, support for EU membership is stronger than in so-called old member-countries," Grabar-Kitarovic says, noting that all European leaders with whom she met supported that initiative.

Croatia has its interests also in its southeast neighbourhood, and those interests concern the permanent stability and progress of those countries, which should be strongly supported on their path to the EU and NATO, the president notes.

Grabar-Kitarovic also says that Croatia has neglected for a long time some of its old friends and allies, mentioning in that context G20, Morocco, the Republic of South Africa, India, Japan, Australia, New Zealand, South Korea, Vietnam, Canada, Mexico, Colombia, Chile and Brazil.

She underlines the need to do more in terms of business diplomacy and notes that Croatia's contribution to international cooperation can be significant in a number of issues, from women's rights to international development cooperation and sustainable development.

She says that this is the reason why she attended a high-level international conference on gender equality in New York and visited Afghanistan and why she plans to attend, until the end of the year, a number of conferences on sustainable development, climate change and development goals for the period after 2015.
