Aim is to clear Croatia of land mines by 2019

BIOGRAD, April 28 (Hina) - Croatia is slowly entering the exit strategy with regard to mine clearance, the plan being to completely clear the country of land mines by 2019, and this year Vukovar-Srijem and Brod-Posavina counties should be completely cleared of land mines, the head of the Croatian Mine Action Centre (HCR), Drazen Jakopec, told the 12th international symposium on mine clearance in the coastal town of Biograd on Tuesday.

Even though large areas have been cleared since the war, unfortunately more than 500 people have been killed by mine explosions, Jakopec said.

The 12th International Symposium and Equipment Exhibition - Mine Action 2015 is being held under the auspices of Croatian Parliament Speaker Josip Leko and will continue until 30 April with 160 participants from 32 countries.

Jakopec underscored that Croatia "is in an excellent position to exchange its experiences in mine clearance with other countries with the same problem."

Two counties in Croatia have been totally cleared of mines, these being Dubrovnik-Neretva County and Virovitica County. This year the HCR is conducting its largest project yet to clear Vukovar-Srijem and Slavonski Brod-Posavina counties of mines, he said, adding that the HCR had received funding above that planned, with HRK 431.5 million secured for this purpose, which is HRK 20 million more than had been expected.
