Opposition MP: Bread and pastry imports in Jan-Oct 2014 total EUR 104M

ZAGREB, March 5 (Hina) - Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ) parliamentarian Zeljko Reiner said on Thursday during a parliamentary debate that in the first ten months of 2014 more than 800 million loaves of bread and other bakery products had imported.

In that period, a negative trade balance of agricultural produce was registered, the Opposition MP warned.

For instance, the import of pork exceeded HRK 1.2 billion, while at the same time more than 2,000 family-run farms are closed down each year, Reiner said during a debate on the final agriculture bill.

Deputy Agriculture Minister Snjezana Spanjol explained that pork exports had deteriorated drastically due to a the case of swine fever.

As for the bakery sector, Spanjol said that last year, the authorities amended the wheat standards rules that were in place since 1954.

We hope that changes aimed at high-quality production and cooperation with farmers, producers and suppliers will yield results, she added.

The agriculture bill also enables the donation of food supplies to the destitute and people stricken by natural disasters and accidents.

The new legislation creates a framework for the absorption of 800 million from EU funds per year for the agricultural sector, she added.
