Asked whether a "new unity" that Grabar-Kitarovic advocates was possible, Leko told Nova TV that he was "a little afraid of that notion."
He recalled that Croatia's economy was in a crisis and that many people were living in hardship. "We all need to look for a solution together and how to lead Croatia in the future," Leko said, adding that he expected the President to fulfill her promises.
"I would like to build unity because it cannot be new without having a past and we need to overcome disputes and differences of the past and look to Croatia's future," he said.
He said that in the political sense Croatia exists in good surroundings, it is a member of the European Union and NATO and in a short period of time it has built enviable democratic standards that need to be preserved. "I expect the new president to do just that," said Leko.
