Ministry says its weapon-collection campaign most successful in UN's history

ZAGREB, Jan 25 (Hina) - Close to 900 pieces of various weapons and more than 500 kilograms of explosives as well as large quantities of mines and ammunition were handed over to Croatian police in 2014, show results of the Ministry of the Interior's campaign "Fewer weapons, fewer tragedies" which the ministry describes as the most efficient campaign of that kind in the history of the United Nations.

These data are all the more impressive if viewed in the context of the fact that since the campaign launch in September 2007, more than 3.3 million kilograms of explosive, almost 9,500 weapons, more than 87,000 explosive devices and close to four million pieces of ammunition have been collected.

The ministry said that this made the campaign the most efficient such drive in the history of the UN and that it was also recognised as the most successful regional campaign based on which other countries in the region were implementing similar drives.

The campaign is based on an agreement signed in 2007 by the Ministry of the Interior and the United Nations Development Programme in Croatia, following amendment of the Weapons Act that enabled a voluntary surrender of forbidden and allowed weapons without any time limits.
