Croats have filed over 11,400 applications with ECHR since 1997

SPLIT, Jan 16 (Hina) - The European Court for Human Rights (ECHR) has to date received 11,410 applications from Croatia, and has delivered judgements in 286 cases, and the Republic of Croatia has paid 3.3 million kuna to applicants from Croatia who won their cases before the Strasbourg-based court, Croatia's legal representative at the ECHR, Stefica Staznik, said in Split on Friday.

The figure of 286 judgements means that in these cases the court made rulings, while it also declared a high number of applications submitted by Croatian citizens inadmissible or recommended peaceful settlement, Staznik said at a panel discussion on the ECHR and its contribution to human rights protection.

She called for better education about human rights in Croatia and urged lawyers to be more engaged in this field.

The data on Croatian applications sent to the ECHR refer to the period since 1997 when Croatia ratified the European Convention on Human Rights recognising the powers of that supranational court.
