Russia to invest EUR 5b in Serbia, says ambassador

BELGRADE, Dec 29 (Hina) - The Kremlin supports Belgrade in dealing with the Kosovo issue by preserving Serbia's sovereignty, and Russia will invest about five billion euros in Serbia over the next couple of years, Russian Ambassador to Serbia Alexander Chepurin has said, Serbian Radio and Television reported on Sunday.

In an interview with the Geopolitika newspaper, Chepurin said Russia had been firm in the position on Kosovo for years.

"We support the Serbs' efforts which are directed at solving the Kosovo issue peacefully, by preserving Serbia's sovereignty," he was quoted as saying.

He said Russia would invest EUR 5 billion in Serbia in the next two to three years through investment and infrastructure projects.

He said the projects were the South Stream gas pipeline (EUR 1.9 billion), investments by Gazprom Neft and the Serbian Oil Industry (EUR 1.5b), and the reconstruction of Serbia's railroads (EUR 600 million).

The ambassador also announced a project involving power and high tech companies, and that Lukoil planned to invest about EUR 500 million.

Commenting on speculation about Serbia's possible drawing closer to NATO and Moscow's stance towards NATO, Chepurin recalled that "Russia is against NATO enlargement in general anywhere" and that NATO's coming closer to the Russian border represented a certain danger for Russia.

"Serbia says it will cooperate with both NATO and the Collective Security Treaty Organisation and has observers in both organisations. Our Defence Minister (Sergey) Shoygu was here (in Belgrade) and both sides are agreed that Serbia should think of its interests," the ambassador was quoted as saying.
