HDZ says constitutional changes call for public discussion

ZAGREB, Dec 17 (Hina) - The opposition HDZ's member of the parliamentary committee on the Constitution, Davorin Mlakar, on Tuesday commented on the fact that the HDSSB withdrew its support for constitutional amendments, saying the HDZ welcomed all those who believed that the amendments should be preceded by a public discussion and a detailed procedure and that the draft amendments undermined the rule of law.

Commenting on a reporter's remark that the HDSSB (Croatian Democratic Party of Slavonia and Baranja) took most exception to a provision on referendums, Mlakar said the HDZ (Croatian Democratic Union) took exception to much more than the provisions.

Asked what it would take for the HDZ to endorse the constitutional amendments eventually, Mlakar said, "We think the whole procedure started on the wrong foot, that the motives for changing the Constitution were entirely wrong. We can't agree to the text of the amendments as it is. It undermines the rule of law, this state's legal security, and some other constitutional amendments undermine the concept of the civic state as conceived and formulated by the Constitution."
