Health sector to get EUR 40m more under new collective agreement

ZAGREB, Nov 14 (Hina) - The independent union of health and welfare workers and the nurses' union on Thursday initialled the final draft of a new collective agreement under which the 72,000 health sector employees would annually get HRK 300 million more for being on call or stand-by than under the current agreement, with the bulk going to hospital doctors.

Under the draft, a specialist with 20 years of service will be paid 144 per cent more for being on call on holidays, 30-40% more for being on call on weekends, including Fridays, and 11-13 per cent more for being on stand-by, the independent union calculated.

Despite the HRK 300m increase, the president of the doctors' union, Ivica Babic, refused to initial the draft, describing the Health Ministry's offer as "shameful."

Even though the government today imposed a work obligation on hospital doctors who have been on strike for nearly two months, Babic announced they would hand in their notices and refuse to work more than 48 hours per week.

If signed, the initialled collective agreement will be in force four years and the 5,700 doctors on call and stand-by will get more than HRK 200m of that HRK 300m increase.
