Human rights ombudswoman calls for reacting to hate crime, speech

ZAGREB, May 26 (Hina) - Human rights ombudswoman Lora Vidovic on Saturday responded to a series of violent incidents and instances of hate speech which occurred this month, calling on the institutions in charge to promptly react and prosecute the perpetrators.

Vidovic mentioned the physical assaults and insulting of volunteers of "In the name of the family", an initiative collecting signatures for a referendum to include in the Constitution a provision defining marriage as the union of a man and a woman, which culminated in injuries sustained by the volunteers and the setting of one of their stalls on fire.

Vidovic also mentioned an incident in Krnjak, when supporters of the Hajduk football club broke into the town hall, harassed those present and took down the flag of the Serb national minority from the building, as well as an incident in Rijeka, when unidentified young people stoned the recently opened Islamic Centre.

Vidovic urged those in charge to react, prosecute the perpetrators and prevent such hate crimes and speech in order to send out "the message that such behaviour will not be tolerated."

She urged relevant institutions to invest additional resources in prevention, notably through civic education programmes, as well as in campaigns to raise awareness among all citizens about the importance of tolerance, non-discrimination and respect for human rights.

Vidovic called on all citizens, especially young people, not to follow such examples of violence. "Such behaviour is contrary to the foundations of human rights, the democratic system we are building, and can have far-reaching negative consequences for all Croatian citizens."
