HDZ, HSS win in 8 counties, SDP in 2 in first local election round

ZAGREB, May 20 (Hina) - According to preliminary results of Sunday's local elections, the Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ) and its coalition partner, the Croatian Peasant Party (HSS), will have prefects in eight counties, the Social Democratic Party (SDP) will have prefects in two, while the prefects of the remaining counties will be elected in a runoff in two weeks' time.

The HDZ will have prefects in Virovitica-Podravina, Brod-Posavina, Dubrovnik-Neretva, Vukovar-Srijem and Like-Senj counties, and the HSS in Zagreb and Koprivnica-Krizevci counties. The HDZ prefect candidate is expected to win in Zadar County as well after 99.59 per cent of the ballots have been counted.

The SDP will have prefects in Krapina-Zagorje and Primorje-Gorski Kotar counties.

In the City of Zagreb, which also has the status of a county, incumbent Mayor Milan Bandic will compete in a runoff against SDP mayoral candidate Rajko Ostojic.

Also, the mayors of Cakovec, Virovitica and Velika Gorica were elected in the first election round, while the mayors of all other cities will be elected in the runoff.

In Cakovec, Stjepan Kovac of an SDP-led coalition was elected mayor; Ivica Kirin, the candidate of an HDZ-led coalition, was elected mayor of Virovitica, and Drazen Barisic, the candidate of an HDZ-led coalition, was elected mayor of Velika Gorica.

In Zagreb, the runoff will be between Bandic and Ostojic; in Split between the SDP-led coalition's Ivo Baldasar and the HDZ-led coalition's Vjekoslav Ivanisevic; in Rijeka between SDP-led coalition candidate Vojko Obersnel and the HDZ-led coalition's Hrvoje Buric; in Osijek between the HDSSB-led coalition's Kresimir Bubalo and non-party candidate Ivan Vrkic; in Pula between the IDS-led coalition's Boris Miletic and the SDP-led coalition's Pedja Grbin; in Vukovar between the SDP-led coalition's Zeljko Sabo and the HDZ-led coalition's Ivan Penava.
