HDZ candidate blames poor turnout on ruling coalition

ZAGREB, April 14 (Hina) - The poor turnout at the first Croatian election of members for the European Parliament has resulted because the ruling coalition decided to hold the election separately from the local election coming up, Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ) candidate for MEP, Davor Stier, said on Sunday evening.

"We warned that holding the European election separately from the local election is just the opposite to practice in a good many EU members states where elections are held jointly. The government decided on the contrary, obviously intentionally so that the turnout to the election be poor. The election process was hurried with too little time for campaigning and citizens were not fully informed of what a European parliamentarian in fact means and how to vote", Stier said when polling stations closed at 7 pm.

His party considers that at least five or six candidates on its slate will be elected to the European Parliament.

The State Election Commission (DIP) reported that around 14.63% of the electorate had cast their ballots by 4 pm.
