150 square km of land in Lika still mine-infested

ZAGREB, April 13 (Hina) - About 150 square kilometres of land in Lika-Senj County is believed to be mine-infested, including 57 square kilometres in the Gospic area, Mayor Milan Kolic said on Saturday at a ceremony at which the county presented its heritage but also pointed to the problem of left-over mines from the 1990s war.

Although a lot has been done in demining, Lika-Senj is one of the most mine-infested counties in the country and about HRK 1.6 million (approx. 210,520 euros) is necessary to clear it of mines, said Kolic, adding that another problem was a high number of unexploded shells.

President Ivo Josopovic was present at the ceremony, thanking all donors for their support in the demining of the Lika region. He supported mine-clearing efforts and highlighted the committed work of the people doing the job.

We won't stop until all mines have been cleared, he said.

The head of the government's demining office, Dijana Plestina, also thanked all donors, recalling that the completion of demining in Croatia was envisaged for spring 2019.
