Contract signed for raising funds for mine removal in Karlovac

KARLOVAC, March 19 (Hina) - International Trust Fund for Demining and Mine Victims Assistance (ITF) director Dorijan Marsic and Karlovac County Prefect Ivan Vucic on Tuesday signed a contract for raising HRK 350,000 each to continue the "Karlovac County Without Mines" programme.

Marsic said the ITF had raised US$ 70 million to date for demining in Croatia from various donors, mainly the US, and that another $700,000 was available for this year.

He doubted that ITF donations in 2014 would be significant because donors are focusing on the many new crisis regions.

He said 31 million square metres of land in Croatia had been cleared of mines with said $70 million, thanking all donors, including the US, Canada, Japan, the European Union, Germany, Austria, the Netherlands, Slovenia, Norway, Israel, Luxembourg, the World Bank, the US Chamber of Commerce, and the Rotarians.

Croatian Mine Action Centre deputy chief Miljenko Vahtaric said Croatia still had to clear 650 square kilometres of land suspected to being mine-infested by 2019.

Responding to questions from the press, he said 3.3 square kilometres have been cleared of mines last year and that plans for this year envisage 4.7 square kilometres. The biggest donor is the EU with EUR 1.15 million.
