Government adopts five-year contract with public broadcaster

ZAGREB, Jan 24 (Hina) - The government on Thursday adopted a draft contract with the public broadcaster Croatian Radio and Television (HRT) for the period from 1 January 2013 to 31 December 2017, defining the HRT's programming obligations and the amount and source of their financing.

The government recommended that parliament adopt the HRT's draft statute.

Under the contract, the HRT is financed from licence fees and commercial revenues, while HRK 13 million annually will come from the state budget for programmes for Croats outside Croatia.

The monthly licence fee may not exceed 1.5 per cent of the average net salary in Croatia. The amount of the fee is decided by the HRT Supervisory Board with the previous consent of the Electronic Media Council.

Under the contract, the HRT has the obligation to produce and broadcast programmes on four TV channels and three national and eight regional radio networks.

Also today, the government adopted a decision to form a committee to mark Croatia's accession to the European Union, comprising members from the foreign, culture and finance ministries, the president's office, the prime minister's office, and parliament.
