ZAGREB, Nov 8 (Hina) - The European Union's Council of Ministers should earmark more funds for education in south-east European countries, and special attention should be paid to history classes in those countries, Doris Pack, the
head of the Network of Parliamentarians for South-East Europe, told reporters in Zagreb on Wednesday following the first session of the Network held in the Croatian capital on Tuesday and Wednesday. The participants (in the conference) call on the Council of Ministers and the European Commission to include education in the CARDS programme in line with the request of the European Parliament's Committee, reads the final document of the first conference of the Network of Parliamentarians, an organisation whose purpose is to improve the implementation of Stability Pact objectives. The conference, which was organised by the Institute East-West, was attended by parliamentarians from Croatia, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Albania, Bulgaria, Romania, FR of Yugoslavia, Macedonia and deputies in the European Parliament. Apart from the Council of Europe, the Network of Parliamentarians also urged the governments of south-east Europe to earmark more funds for education.

Pack told reporters history classes should enable students to
realise that truth "is often somewhere in the middle" and to learn
to compare their views on the history of their country and those of
neighbouring countries.
We have to create conditions for a critical view on history, said
Pack, who also heads a delegation of the European Parliament in
charge of relations with south-east European countries.
The next meeting of the Network, set for February next year, is
likely to take place in Skopje, with the main topic being the
smuggling of humans, minority rights and environmental
protection.
