CLASHES NEAR KUMANOVO; PM DECIDES AGAINST DECLARING STATE OF WAR

SKOPJE, June 8 (Hina) - Severe fighting was reported from the Kumanovo area on Friday morning. A spokesman for Macedonia's armed forces said Albanian terrorists, deployed in villages of Matejca, Slupcane, Orizara and Otalj, were attacking the Macedonians security forces this morning. According to the Macedonian radio, a police patrol in the village of Mojance near Skopje came under attack. On late Thursday evening Macedonia's President Boris Trajkovski held talks with Ljupco Georgievski, the Premier and leader of the VMRO-DPMNE, and Branko Crvenkovski, the leader of the Social Democratic Alliance. After the talks Georgievski said they had overcome disagreements between these two political parties in connection with the security situation in the country and political dialogues which the head of state was conducting. Taking into consideration negative response, Georgievski said he had given up a proposal that state of war should be declared. He, however, confirmed that he was still in favour of the war option in the encounter with terrorists. On Friday afternoon the European Union's High Representative for foreign and security policies, Javier Solana, is arriving in Skopje

On Friday afternoon the European Union's High Representative for foreign and security policies, Javier Solana, is arriving in Skopje for talks with the Macedonian leadership and politicians. For a few days most opposition parties have been asking for the resignation of the incumbent premier Georgievski, and privately- owned media announce that Solana will also propose his replacement, and that Branko Crvenkovski is likely to succeed him.
