After an early upswing failed to carry the benchmark March contract through $1,375 a tonne resistance, traders said the market resumed its weak tone. "The market is in a downtrend. It keeps making lower lows and lower highs," said Allendale Commodities analyst Jim Cordier. "Until cocoa gets some news to get it out of the doldrums, the technicals look weak." Most-active March cocoa ended $10 a tonne lower, at $1,358, after ranging between $1,375 and $1,357. Spot December ended down $17, at $1,311, while the back months finished $8 to $9 weaker. On the charts, traders pegged near-term March support at $1,350, then $1,330. After the $1,375 mark, strong resistance was seen at $1,390, followed by $1,400. Traders continued to await arrival figures from top-producer Ivory Coast. A late 1996/97 marketing season opening, combined with delays in granting export licences and normal administrative and financing problems, appeared to have created a more confusing picture this year, General Cocoa Co. said in its weekly newsletter. General Cocoa "guesstimated" Ivornian arrivals through November 2 were around 125,000 tonnes compared with 135,000 tonnes at about the same date last year. They also estimated that total cumulative arrivals through November 9 to be around 160,000 tonnes compared to 200,000 in the same period last year. They stressed, however, that these figures, which included stocks accumulated prior to the season opening and carryover from the 1996 mid-crop, were very preliminary. "We again emphasize that too much attention should not be paid to these early "guesstimates" until a more definative crop pattern evolves possibly by mid December," General Cocoa said. Volume was thin, at an estimated 4,199 lots. 191048 MET nov 96
