NYCE cotton ends lower after Dunavant speech
NEW YORK, Sept 9 (Reuter) - NYCE cotton futures ended
lower Monday after a speech last week by closely watched
cotton merchant William B. Dunavant cast a bearish light on
the market.
"Dunavant put a bearish spin on his speech and it was
evident in the market early," one trader said.
In his speech at the Western Cotton Conference in
California Friday, Dunavant pegged U.S. 1996/97 cotton
production at 18.65 million 480-lb bales and exports at 6.0
million bales, traders said
He estimated ending stocks at 4.7 to 4.8 million bales.
In August, USDA in their monthly report put production at
18.577 million bales, while exports were estimated at 6.6
million bales and ending stocks were seen at 4.0 million
bales..
"The speech certainly started it all," said Prudential
Securities cotton specialist Ernest Simon. "But mainly it was
the realization that U.S. cotton is too highly priced and can
not sell."
Simon said Dunavant's low export figure, while in line
with industry expectations, underscored the the problem of
U.S. cotton's steep price relative to the rest of the world.
The benchmark December contract settled 1.33 cents lower
at 72.85 cents a lb after trading from 73.65 to 72.65.
Front-month October ended down 1.34 at 71.76, while the back
months finished 0.40 to 1.30 weaker.
Meanwhile, traders and analysts await the September USDA
crop report due Wednesday at 0830 EDT.
Industry sources polled by Reuters said they expect the
USDA's production forecast to come in between 18.3 million and
18.8 million 480-lb bales, with most expectations at the high
end of the range.
Market sources also await news on potential damage to the
North and South Carolina cotton crops after Hurricane Fran
swept through the region last week.
"They have not really figured out the damage yet," said
Simon. "There was some damage, but from what I'm hearing it
was minimal."
Simon also noted that North Carolina's cotton crop at
about one million bales and South Carolina's at 400,000 bales
were relatively small.
Technically, traders pegged December support at
72.50-71.50, while resistance was seen near 74.20.
Volume was estimated at 9,000 lots.
