Dunavant. Market sources expect bearish news on both fronts as weekly sales remain slack and the U.S. crop remains in excellent condition overall. Industry sources pegged the USDA's production forecast, set for release Wednesday at 0830 EDT, between 18.3 million and 18.8 million 480-lb bales, with most estimates coming in at the high end of the range. The USDA put the crop at 18.577 million bales in August. Additionally, a U.S. agricultural attache put India's 1995/96 crop at 12.3 million 480-lb bales today, up substantially from the USDA's estimate of 11.9 million bales. "That could weigh on prices if nothing happens in China," said Carl Anderson, a cotton marketing specialist with Texas A&M University. A Chinese crop that is smaller than previously projected could open the door for more U.S. exports, however. "The big question is whether China will be in the market for more than a milion bales of U.S. cotton," Anderson said. December settled 0.54 higher at 74.18, traded 74.39 to 73.60. October ended up 0.38 at 73.10, while the back months finished 0.65 to 0.12 higher. Volume was estimated at 10,000 lots. Market sources also await news on potential damage to the North and South Carolina crops after Hurricane Fran swept through the region Thursday. Some industry sources said the hurricane would cause losses while others said it may have brought beneficial rains to the crop. 091225 MET sep 96
