December cotton lost 2.14 cents a lb to end at 69.93 cents while nearby March was off 1.69 cents at 71.57 cents. "It was all the report," one cotton trader said. U.S. Department of Agriculture early Monday pegged the 1997/98 U.S. cotton crop at 18.85 million bales, about 300,000 bales more than what the trade had anticipated and higher than the October projection of 18.41 million bales, one trader said. Last year, 18.94 million bales were harvested. Analysts and traders said the trade was a big seller in heavy volume as about 37,000 lots changed hands. Not only was the U.S. cotton crop larger-than-expected but the 1997/98 Chinese crop was estimated at 18 million bales, 500,000 bales up from the October projection. "Many in the trade did not feel that the USDA would increase the Chinese crop as much as they did," Mississippi State University cotton marketing specialist O.A. Cleveland said. Analysts and merchants said production was weighing on the market. "It was reasonable to assume that the these lower physical prices will increase reluctance on the part of U.S. cotton growers to price their current crop," said one. 111105 MET nov 97
