Elsewhere, copper drifted back following a narrowing in nearby spreads and a further stocks rise, while tin, on investment fund buying, sparked buy-stops and raced higher. Traders said that profit-taking moved aluminium from its high, though they expected the market to launch a further upside attack after a period of consolidation. "There is strong talk that a powerful fund is buying aluminium," one trader said. Traders said if the market breaks above $1,725 resistance they expect prices to test $1,750. The earlier higher probe found support from Far Eastern buying and a small fall in LME stocks. A narrowing in copper's nearby spreads and a stocks rise of 7,150 tonnes pressured copper lower. The cash to three months spread was slightly easier at $30/$35. Several traders suggested that copper may head towards $2,300 in afternoon LME trading. Investment fund buying and trade covering lifted tin to $5,640, up $95. Traders said the move came as no surprise as tin had posted good gains during the week. "It was oversold and is players catch up," one trader said describing the gains. Resistance was pegged at $5,690. Zinc trading calmly after a week of extreme volatility. It was last at $1,458, down $2. Traders said that a stocks rise helped to dent sentiment and expected prices to come under further downside pressure as charts turn lower. Traders noted fund selling. Nickel gained by $10 to $7,440. The market awaited an announcement by Canada's Falconbridge on the result of labour talks. Lead was quiet and last quoted at $637/38, against $632.
