LME zinc powers higher during morning business
LONDON, July 28 (Reuter) - Zinc prices streaked higher during
brisk morning business as shorts rushed to cover after another
fall in London Metal Exchange (LME) stocks.
Elsewhere copper held stable levels, while aluminium moved to
test resistance around $1,700 a tonne.
Traders said they expected zinc to rise in coming days given
strong market fundamentals. "There is no reason why zinc can not
reach $1,700 by the end of this week," one trader said.
Three months zinc peaked on short-covering and investment
fund buying at a fresh seven-year high of $1,674 per tonne, up
on Friday's close of $1,624.
Earlier stocks fell by 6,775 tonnes to 393,525 tonnes, a move
that sparked a run of short-covering. Further support was
gleaned from firm nearby backwardation. Zinc's cash to three
month backwardation was seen above $70. It ended Friday at
around $55.
Traders noted news that China National Nonferrous Metals Corp
(CNNC) said it was considering helping Chinese zinc smelters
which are holding large short positions.
It is uncertain how CNNC is going to bale out the short
smelters, traders said. "Either they will pay for it eventually
or try to trade themselves out of it," one trader said, adding
that the announcement by CNNC was "ambiguous".
Copper finished $2 lower at $2,372 following another LME
stocks rise.
Traders said upside confidence is waning in copper after it
failed to move to test resistance at $2,400. A stocks rise of
3,900 tonnes helped to dampen sentiment.
Aluminium mounted an attack on resistance at $1,700 against
the backdrop of a further stocks fall and tightness around
August.
But expected selling emerged around this area which saw
prices settle at $1,696, an $11 gain.
Nickel moved higher on buy-stops and trade interest to settle
at $7,290, well up on Friday's $7,180 close. Traders said the
move came despite another stocks rise as many market operators
believed the market had been oversold recently.
Tin finished $10 higher at $5,400, while lead was quoted at
$649/50, versus $653.
Alloy settled at $1,510/15, against $1,500/10.
