Three months copper climbed to a high of $2,337 per tonne in pre-market activity, up $22 from Monday's afternoon kerb close. Later, prices eased back to $2,325. Chartists said the market would seek to continue to fill a gap between $2,308 and $2,365. The premium of cash over three months, which surged by over $100 on Monday, was steady on Tuesday morning at $245/$255, but traders were closely watching it. Volumes, however, had not been significant so far. "I think people are waiting for the rings," one trader said. On Monday the cash/day spread traded at $19 and traders said they expect similar levels on Tuesday. The LME-imposed limit -- one percent of the previous day's cash settlement -- is $25 on Tuesday. Broker GNI said that it was clear the market was being squeezed, but the lack of deliveries showed the market was fundamentally tight. "Traders will be watching stock flows over the next week or so to see if this continues to be the case," GNI added. Stocks increased by 2,100 tonnes on Tuesday after a rise of 2,075 tonnes on Monday. Analysts said inventories would likely move from Comex warehouses into LME depots in the U.S. Aluminium slipped back into its previous range after a failed attempt to challenge the $1,600 mark. Prices shed $12 to $1,572, after hitting a peak of $1,597 on Monday. For much of last week, the market oscillated between $1,560 and $1,580. Stocks fell by 1,875 tonnes, but the market was concerned another 10,000 tonne chunk may be soon be delivered, as happened on Friday, GNI said. Zinc was lacklustre, hovering under $1,500 after chalking up a fresh 6-3/4 high of $1,507 on Monday. It was last indicated at $1495/97, down from Monday's close of $1,502. Any further rise would be hampered by an overbought situation, with the 14-day RSI at 77, analysts said. Nickel was barely lower at $6,870, down $10, after failing at the top of its recent range on Monday. Prices have held roughly between $6,800 and $7,000 for the past two weeks. A break out from the range is due soon, chartist Harry Creates of broker AMT said. Tin lost $10 at $5,580 after fund short-covering boosted the market on Monday. The market needs to close above the June 20 high of $5,645 to make it look more positive, broker Brandeis said in a report.
