The benchmark December contract climbed to a high of 74.55 cents, still shy of its upside target of 75.00 cents, however. Volume remained thin at an estimated 12,000 lots compared with Tuesday's official 12,626 lots. Traders said a lack of fundamental news about the developing crop is keeping many players out of the ring. "Overall, the U.S. crop is two to three weeks late in getting started from New Mexico to the Carolinas with a lot of mixed patterns within," Carl Anderson, a cotton marketing specialist with Texas A & M University, said. He added that warm weather across much of the cotton belt for the past two weeks has sped crop development, but it is far too early in the season to gauge output or yields. The most-active December contract closed 0.19 cent firmer at 74.35 cents per lb, having ranged from 74.55 to 74.15 cents. The rest of the board closed unchanged to 0.44 cent higher. Support remained at the contract low of 73.70 cents followed by 70.00 cents in December. Dealers said the market could continue to retrace losses that sent the December contract to its lifteme low of 73.70 cents, amid technical buying. 100916 MET jul 97
