Three months copper ended the kerb $45 stronger at $2,461 per tonne, maintaining the gains of a pre-market rally attributed variously to a drop in LME stocks, potential labour problems in Chile and fund buying. But while prices moved in a narrow $5 range in the rings, the action in the nearby spreads was far more dramatic. Cash to threes backwardation soared to $90/$95 during the kerb, compared to $77/$78 in the second ring and $52/$57 on Wednesday afternoon. The May/June dates alone zoomed out from $7 to $20. Immediately after the kerb three months copper surged above $2,470 as Comex roared ahead after its opening, and the cash/thres spread widened to above $100 a tonne. "Things are getting tight. There's stuff moving out but nothing coming in. People are going to take action," one trader said of the tightening spreads, noting the 3,225 tonne drop in LME stocks on Thursday. The market was also watching developments at Chile's massive Chuquicamata copper mines, where unions representing supervisors were in talks to renew a pay deal which expires at the end of the month. "It's very hard to see what is driving the market right now. Everyone is seeing bits and pieces but there's no cohesive picture," a trader said. Fund-related buying and shortcovering had set off a rally on Wednesday and Thursday morning. Once prices hurdled the key $2,440 resistance level, buy stops were triggered and copper raced higher, trader said. "Copper looks very good right now, because that $2,440 level was very important. If it can stay above here it has much farther to go," a trader said. Analysts pegged $2,500 and then $2,550 as the next key targets for copper. Zinc was the other big mover in the premarket and like copper it preferred to consolidate its gains during the midsession rather than advance further. It ended at $1,354, up $15, and just off the day's high of $1,588. A stock drawdown of 1,100 helped underpin zinc's already bullish outlook at fresh 4-1/2 year highs. But neither copper's strength, nor another sizable LME stock draw of 3,750 tonnes, was enough to take aluminium beyond stiff resistance in the $1,670-$1,680 area. It ended the kerb at $1,663, up just $4 from its previous finish. "Aluminium doesn't look bad at these levels but it probably has some more consolidating to do before it breaks out above $1,675," one floor trader said. "On the other hand, if copper keeps going aluminium probably will too." The other metals, outside of nickel, were lacklustre in light of the buoyancy of flagship copper. Tin was last at $5,795, up $65, while quiet lead was indicated little changed at $623/$625. Alloy was also very quiet and little changed. Nickel, however, was $100 firmer at $7,830 after testing the top end of its recent range.
