Three months copper ended the morning kerb barely weaker at $2,236 per tonne, down $4, after making a half-hearted stab at the upside during pre-market activity, touching $2,254. By the time ring activity was under way, prices had drifted back and held a tight range. The bulk of copper business was in spreads and forwards, which were well bid, floor traders said. Interest was seen throughout the year, in April through June as well as October, December and May 1998. March/threes was at a $80/$83 backwardation, making up the bulk of tightness in the cash/threes backwardation of around $85, little changed from Wednesday. Inventories on Friday were expected to decline slightly, with preliminary estimates by floor traders in a 3,000 to 5,000 tonne range. Stocks fell by 1,100 tonnes on Tuesday. Nearby upside resistance is pegged around from $2,350 to $2,360. The target of an ascending triangle is $2,450, chartists say. "I think it still has upside scope but the question is whether it has to lose $30 to $50 first," a floor trader said. Most of the other metals followed copper's lead. Aluminium challenged the upside, hitting $1,615 but finished the morning at $1,608, up $4 and above the $1,600 level. Even if it breaks higher, a thick layer of resistance is expected from $1,622 up to $1,643, one dealer said. Zinc challenged Wednesday's fresh two-year high of $1,235, but failed, ending the kerb $12 lower at $1,218. Nickel lost sight of $7,900 after Norilsk Nickel said there have been no output problems depsite a Thursday deadline by workers demanding salary arrears. It ended the morning $75 weaker at $7,835. Lead was $2 easier at $668 and tin was virtually ignored, indicated little changed at $6,050/55 versus $6,065. Alloy ended unchanged at $1,530. 211022 MET feb 97
