Benchmark May futures fell $3 to $1,554 per tonne, ending toward the middle of the day's $1,548-1,567 trading range. Nearby March fell $2 to $1,516, while the rest slipped between $1 and $2. Market turnover showed little improvement from the previous day, reaching an estimated 3,313 lots by the close. A meager 2,428 lots changed hands on Tuesday. Traders said an absence of fresh news had dulled interest in the market in the past few days, adding that activity had been focused on the London March contract's first notice day. "People were hoping that the Commitment of Traders report would spark a little excitement, but it didn't," one trader said. "It's just very, very quiet." Last Friday, the CFTC reported that speculators had taken on a net short stance of some 3,000 lots, which traders said left room for the funds to do some new buying. But the report failed to generate much enthusiasm, and prices have stuck to a narrow range since the New York market returned from a three-day break on Tuesday. Technically, support was noted in the May contract in the mid-$1,530s, followed by $1,511. To the upside, buy stops were believed to be well-placed above $1,575 in May. 191159 MET feb 98
