The bellwether May position rose $9 on the day, to $1,553, after trading from $1,535 to $1,555. Front-month March climbed $11 to $1,515, ending just shy of its intraday peak at $1,517. A downturn on the British pound put pressure on the dollar-denominated New York cocoa market early in the session, but steady bargain-hunting by the manufacturing sector helped to nudge prices back to the plus column by midday, dealers said. "Both the New York and London market seemed to be sold out on the speculative side in the short-term," one trader said. "And the industry sees a little bit of value in this." Cocoa prices tumbled nearly $50 a tonne on Monday, as growing confidence in the world supply situation and the approach of the spot contract's delivery period sparked a tidal wave of speculative liquidation. Traders looked for the market to attempt to extend today's consolidation on Wednesday, but May futures were expected to run into fairly stiff resistance in the $1,570s.
