Merino fleece was cheaper, with 19/22/23 microns 0.5 percent cheaper, 20/21/24/26m one percent cheaper and 25m up to 0.5 percent cheaper while merino skirtings were generally slightly cheaper, WI said. In crossbreds, 27m was 0.5 percent cheaper, 28m slightly cheaper, 29/30m 1.5 percent cheaper and 31m slightly dearer. WI said Japan and Western Europe were principal operators with support from most sectors of the trade. Of the 21,524 bales offered, 14 percent were passed in. In early Fremantle trading, merino fleece of 21/22m was four percent cheaper, 23m three percent cheaper and 24m 2.5 percent cheaper. Combing was keeping adequately active but topmakers reported that their spinner customers are not so well placed, and that short-time working was likely soon, if it is not already taking place. Sterling's strength was again cited as the main problem, and was continuing to erode any hopes of successfully exporting. Anxiety was also expressed over inroads made by imports at every stage.
