Presidential candidate says bank issue should be solved by experts

LJUBLJANA, Oct 25 (Hina) - The issue of Ljubljanska Banka's debt to Croatian clients should be solved at the expert level, Milan Zver, one of Slovenia's three presidential candidates, said on Thursday.

Relations with Croatia generally are not the focus of the campaign for the November 11 election but in an interview with the Politikis portal, Zver briefly spoke of the issue.

Asked if Slovenia should make the ratification of Croatia's European Union accession treaty conditional on the solution to the bank issue suggested by Slovenia, Zver said this was a "difficult issue" but agreed the two countries' experts for the matter should continue to work on a solution.

Asked whose side the EU would take if the Ljubljanska Banka dispute went on, Zver said Slovenia was already damaged by the border arbitration agreement signed by former Slovenian Prime Minister Borut Pahor who, he said, did not solve the bank issue at the time of Croatia's EU entry talks. He said the arbitration agreement "was a big mistake of the Pahor cabinet."

Zver said he wanted "Croatia to join the EU as soon as possible as that would be one way of control that it must act in accordance with European norms and standards."
