Deputy parliament speaker, ambassador discuss Croatia-Israel relations

ZAGREB, Oct 17 (Hina) - Croatian Deputy Parliament Speaker Nenad Stazic on Wednesday held talks with Israeli Ambassador Yosef Amrani on the restitution of Jewish property seized during the Ustasha and communist regimes, and on cooperation between the two countries, parliament said in a statement.

Amrani voiced hope that every effort would be made to solve the restitution issue, saying the survival of the Jewish community in Zagreb depended on that property. Stazic, a member of the Croatia-Israel friendship group in the Sabor, pledged assistance withing Croatia's legal framework.

Amrani said parliamentary friendship groups could encourage governments to intensify cooperation.

The ambassador said he realised that accession to the European Union was the priority of Croatia's foreign policy, voicing hope that Croatia would see a partner in Israel for developing close relations, notably in agriculture and tourism.

Stazic said Croatia could learn a lot from Israel's experience with irrigation.

Amrani said Israelis travelled three times a year, which was a big and insufficiently exploited potential for Croatian tourism, adding that more should be done in the promotion of Croatian tourism in Israel.

Stazic invited the Israeli-Croatian friendship group in the Knesset to visit the Croatian parliament.

He and Amrani said it was necessary to maintain dialogue between the two countries, suggesting the friendship groups and parliament speakers exchange visits after Israel's early election in January.

Amrani hoped that Moshe Matalon, the architect of Croatian-Israeli relations, would be reappointed head of the Israeli-Croatian friendship group in the Knesset, the statement said.
