President comments on ratification of Croatia-Bosnia border deal

SPLIT, Sept 14 (Hina) - Asked by the press to comment on the opposition's opinion that the Croatian-Bosnian border agreement should be ratified in parliament by a two-thirds and not a simple majority, President Ivo Josipovic said in Split on Friday this was a very sensitive issue.

It is good the government has launched the ratification and parliament should now give its verdict, be it positive or negative, Josipovic said.

"Defining the border with neighbours is very important and it represents the completion not only of our process of reconciliation but of the process of consolidation of our countries. On the other hand, it's a very sensitive issue, both politically and emotionally and, in my opinion, this procedure should be accompanied by very clear explanations as to why a positive ratification is being proposed and why this is good for Croatia."

Josipovic said some legal aspects should be cleared up in the procedure, primarily if the disputed area was or was not part of the former Socialist Republic of Croatia when Croatia declared independence.

That's the key issue and all other historical considerations are irrelevant, he added.

He expects the parliamentary discussion on the ratification to provide citizens with answers to all of their questions.
