Pusic extends condolences to Clinton on Libyan attack

ZAGREB, Sept 12 (Hina) - Croatian Foreign Minister Vesna Pusic on Wednesday extended condolences to U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton on the murder of U.S. Ambassador Christopher Stevens and three other U.S. Embassy staff in Libya.

"On behalf of the Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs of the Republic of Croatia and in my personal capacity, I would like to extend to you and the American people my deepest condolences on the tragic loss of Ambassador J. Christopher Stevens, Sean Smith and others. I was shocked and saddened to learn about the brutal rocket attack on the American Consulate in Benghazi which ended the lives of civil servants who clearly placed their work and their country before themselves," Pusic said in a note.

"We strongly condemn this senseless act of terrorism which will not deter those of us who share in the joint effort that promotes the values of freedom, democracy and stability and we hope that this great sacrifice will ultimately lead to a stable and peaceful Libya," she added.

"Croatia remains a devoted ally of the United States in the fight against terrorism and we grieve with your country at the loss of people who clearly lived and died by their commitment to preserve the values which we all hold so dear," said the note.

The U.S. ambassador and embassy staff were killed in a rocket attack on their car as they were rushed from the consular building on Tuesday night. In Benghazi, gunmen attacked and burned the U.S. consulate, killing one consular official.

The attacks were prompted by a U.S.-made film about the Prophet Mohammad released online, of which U.S. circles and controversial U.S. pastor Terry Jones are suspected.

Protesters in Egypt tore down an American flag and burned it during a demonstration on Tuesday, also against the film.
