Sejdic, Finci slam agreement between Bosnian SDP, HDZ parties

MOSTAR, Aug 10 (Hina) - The leaders of the Roma and Jewish communities in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Dervo Sejdic and Jakob Finci, and 18 Bosnian non-governmental organisations called on the US Congress and the European Parliament on Friday to support them in stopping the parliamentary ratification of an agreement between the SDP and HDZ BiH parties.

In a joint statement, they said the political agreement did not enable the removal of discrimination against representatives of national minorities and other citizens during elections and participation in government as requested in a European Court of Human Rights ruling.

According to a letter sent to the US Congress and the European Parliament, the agreement is in contravention of the European Convention on Human Rights and the value of the vote of constituent peoples that the agreement would impose could be compared to the US Constitution before slavery was abolished.

We appeal to you to join us in the fight for the equality of all Bosnian citizens before the law, regardless of their ethnicity, faith or race, to support our objection to this disgraceful agreement, and to support the demand for a solution that would ensure equal rights to all citizens, the letter said.

Because of objections to the political agreement, SDP (Social Democratic Party) vice president and member of the Bosnian Presidency Zeljko Komsic left the party.

Croat political parties support the agreement, saying it would improve the position of Croats who can currently be outvoted by Bosniaks and Serbs during the election of deputies to the state upper house and presidency.

The agreement envisages the indirect election of the state leadership and different territorial solutions to the election of deputies to the upper house.
