Serbia's court rules that law on Vojvodina's powers is against constitution

SUBOTICA, July 11 (Hina) - Serbia's Constitutional Court has ruled that Novi Sad cannot be defined as the capital of the Province of Vojvodina but as the provincial administrative centre and seat, the local media reported on Wednesday citing the decision of the court which analysed the law describing the powers and responsibilities of the Autonomous Province of Vojvodina.

The law was enacted on 1 January 2010, with the approval of the then Serbian president Boris Tadic. However, the Democratic Party of Serbia led by Vojislav Kostunica and the New Serbia party filed the request with the Serbian Constitutional Court to examine the constitutionality of 25 provisions of the above-mentioned law and a majority of provisions of the Statute of Vojvodina, which was passed on 14 December 2009 by the provincial assembly.

The court found 20 articles of the law to be in contravention with Serbia's constitution, according to the local media.

For instance, the provision enabling Vojvodina to set up its offices in regions of Europe, including Brussels, is unconstitutional.

The court challenges the right of Vojvodina to pass, implement and supervise the agrarian policy and rural development measures as well as the right to regulate the official use of languages of local ethnic minorities.
