Opposition politician slams fuel excise tax rise

ZAGREB, July 9 (Hina) - Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ) parliamentarian and former economy minister Djuro Popijac on Monday criticised the government over its decision to increase excise taxes on motor gasoline and gas oil, and said that this increase was unjustified.

The goal of this government is to fill in the state budget, but this is not so easy, despite an increase of the Value Added Tax to 25 percent, and they are seeking other ways to collect more revenues, the opposition's politician said in parliament when asked by reporters whether the fuel tax rise was justified.

He also labelled as nonsensical Economy Minister Radimir Cacic's statement that the government had a formula that told them that fuel prices would not go up in the coming period.
