PM urges inviting int'l bids for Rijeka lowland railway as soon as possible

STINICA, July 3 (Hina) - Prime Minister Zoran Milanovic said on Tuesday that international bids for the construction of a new Rijeka lowland railway should be called as soon as possible, and that tourism should focus on making Croatia the best possible destination.

He visited the new ferry port Stinica, attended the signing of an agreement on the co-financing of the reconstruction of the Misnjak port on the northern Adriatic island of Rab, visited the town of Rab and met with local officials.

Responding to questions from the press, Milanovic said that in terms of capacity, the existing Rijeka railway could not keep up with the port much longer, adding that Rijeka was one of the bigger European seaports which could welcome the largest ships.

He said the government would see to it, in cooperation with international investors and Europe, that the lowland railway project was launched, stressing it was important that Croatia had as soon as possible a new cargo railway that linked it with Vienna and Budapest.

Milanovic said the Rijeka area in the northern Adriatic was in his government's focus because of its development prospects.

Speaking of the tourist season, he said the state must commit to making Croatia a quality destination.

Milanovic said the government would push tourism but that Croatia could not live off tourism alone and that it was capable of going for higher levels of technology and knowledge.

He said tourism provided employment but was limiting in terms of education.

Very soon, we will employ more and more people who are not from Croatia for low paying jobs in tourism, he added.
