War veterans minister satisfied with verdict in Lovas war crime trial

ZAGREB, June 27 (Hina) - Croatian War Veterans Minister Predrag Matic said on Tuesday justice was slow but sure, voicing hope that a higher court would uphold today's verdict by the Belgrade High Court against 14 persons accused of a war crime committed in Lovas, eastern Croatia in 1991.

Speaking to Hina, Matic said the accused were given the deserved punishment.

He voiced hope that a higher court will not change the verdict, as was the case in earlier trials for war crimes committed at Ovcara, also in eastern Croatia, bringing into question the entire Lovas trial.

The Belgrade High Court sentenced Ljuban Devetak to 20 years' imprisonment and the other 13 accused to sentences ranging from four to 14 years, finding them guilty of violations of international law and war crimes against civilians.
