Ex-minister testifies at trial of Serb rebel leader charged with policemen's murder

KARLOVAC, June 12 (Hina) - The trial of Mile Dakic, a former Croatian Serb rebel leader, resumed before the Karlovac County Court on Tuesday with Josip Boljkovac, a former interior minister, testifying about events in 1991.

Dakic was convicted in his absence by the Karlovac County Court to 20 years for inciting the murder of three Croatian police officers -- Mile Butina, Josip Milcic and Zlatko Skrlec -- in Krnjak municipality on 4 August 1991. He was extradited from Bosnia and Herzegovina to Croatia last summer and after that his retrial started.

Boljkovac told the court that at the time relevant to the indictment he no longer served as Minister of Internal Affairs but as an assistant director of the Security and Intelligence Agency (SIS), and added that Dakic was not a subject of "SIS investigations" at the time.

He said that other Croatian Serb rebel leaders, including Milan Martic and Milan Babic and Belgrade had a final say in the areas held by Serb insurgents.

"We possessed no negative data pertaining to Dakic," the witness said.

The next hearing is scheduled for 10 July in the Rijeka County Court which is equipped with necessary mechanisms for testifying witnesses from Belgrade via video links.

At the commencement of his trial, Dakic pleaded not guilty.
