Belgrade court convicts four accused of Beli Manastir war crime

BELGRADE, June 19 (Hina) - The Belgrade High Court's war crimes chamber on Tuesday sentenced four former Serb paramilitaries, accused of war crimes against civilians in Beli Manastir, Croatia in October 1991, to imprisonment ranging from 18 months to 20 years.

Zoran Vuksic was given the maximum prison sentence - 20 years, Slobodan Strigic was given ten, Branko Hrnjak five, and Velimir Bertic one and a half years.

They were accused of killing at least six non-Serb civilians, unlawful imprisonment, violation of physical integrity rights, intimidation, terrorising, torture, and inhumane treatment.

Under the indictment, the civilian victims were Adam Baric, Ivo Malek, Vinko Cicak and his sons Ivan, Ante and Mate.

The chamber found that the defendants had committed war crimes against civilians, breaching international law and the Geneva Convention.

Serbian Deputy War Crimes Prosecutor Bruno Vekaric announced he would appeal the sentences given to Strigic, Hrnjak and Bertic, saying, "We are against war crimes being treated as ordinary criminal offences."

The case was referred to the Serbian judiciary by the Croatian State Prosecutor's Office in 2008.

The trial began on 1 November 2010. Sixty-seven witnesses were heard.
