Vukovar 1991 association of lawyers writes to PM about war crimes trials

ZAGREB, May 24 (Hina) - The Vukovar 1991 association of lawyers asked Prime Minister Zoran Milanovic on Thursday to initiate as soon as possible through the Justice Ministry the signing of an agreement with the Serbian Justice Ministry on war crimes trials, so that the Croatian, Serbian and international public can find out the truth about Serbian detention camps.

We want all those responsible for war crimes, regardless of where they committed them, all those who killed, abused and raped prisoners of war, civilians, the wounded and the defenders of Vukovar, to be tried in independent and fair proceedings, Zoran Sangut of the association told reporters.

In 2007, the association filed a criminal complaint with Croatia's State Prosecutor's Office for the prosecution of war crimes committed in camps in Serbia and Croatia, as well as to Serbia's War Crimes Prosecutor's Office four years ago.

A little over a year ago, the Osijek County Prosecutor's Office filed an indictment against Major General Aleksandar Vasiljevic, the chief of the former Yugoslav Army's Security Administration, and Miroslav Zivanovic, the commander of a detention camp in Begejci.

An extensive investigation established beyond any doubt that they committed war crimes against civilians and POWs, because all POWs, both civilians and defenders, were tortured and 19 were killed in those camps, said Pero Kovacevic, another member of the Vukovar 1991 association of lawyers.
