Tadic congratulates Nikolic on winning Serbian presidential election

BELGRADE, May 20 (Hina) - Boris Tadic, the president of the Democratic Party (DS) and the Serbian presidential candidate of a coalition led by the DS, on Sunday evening congratulated his opponent, Tomislav Nikolic of the Serbian Progressive Party, of winning the presidential election.

According to provisional results of today's presidential runoff, released by the Serbian State Election Commission, Nikolic won 50.21 per cent of the vote and Tadic won 46.77 per cent.

Congratulating Nikolic, Tadic told reporters the victory was fair and deserved and wished Nikolic success in "this very difficult office."

Asked if he would be the new prime minister, Tadic said: "No, I certainly won't be the new prime minister."

He said that focusing on the EU was "of existential importance for Serbia", a matter of peace and economic development.

Speaking to the press, Nikolic thanked Tadic on the congratulations.

He said Serbia with him as president would not stray from the European path and that it would protect its citizens in Kosovo, adding that Serbia must also develop its economy and get rid of corruption.
