Polling stations in Serbian presidential runoff close

BELGRADE, May 20 (Hina) - Polling stations in Serbia's presidential runoff were closed at 8 pm on Sunday and the turnout by 7 pm was 41.5 per cent, said the Serbian non-governmental organisation CeSID - Centre for Free Elections and Democracy.

A total of 6,771,479 eligible voters could vote at 8,390 polling stations, including 38 in 22 foreign countries, between Boris Tadic of the ruling coalition's Democratic Party and Tomislav Nikolic of the opposition Serbian Progressive Party.

The turnout by 7 pm was the same as the turnout in the presidential runoff in 2004, when the two candidates were also Tadic and Nikolic, CeSID programme manager Marko Blagojevic told Tanjug news agency.

He expects the final turnout to be between 45 and 46 per cent, and said the election passed peacefully and without irregularities that could affect its outcome.
