Croatian Railways' Infrastructure division plans downsizing

ZAGREB, April 26 (Hina) - The management board of Croatian Railways' (HZ) Infrastructure division plans to lay off about 650 workers, reduce the number of levels of decision-making, and combine a number of organisational units into one, while preserving infrastructure maintenance, chairman Darko Pericic told Hina on Thursday.

HZ Infrastructure has 8,194 positions and the new draft organisation plan envisages 6,774. Currently, it has 6,823 employees. The draft was sent to the unions active in the company for advisement.

HZ Infrastructure also plans to raise business efficiency and labour productivity as well as abolish unnecessary positions, Pericic said.

He said the surplus labour would be provided for according to a programme to be defined in cooperation with the government.

Pericic said investment projects were being drawn up to apply for financing from the European Union's pre-accession and other funds as well as other sources, including for the renovation of railroads on the pan-European Corridor X.

Four unions active in HZ will stage a protest on May 3 against the HZ Infrastructure management board's restructuring plan, including the lay-off of hundreds of workers without clear criteria, union leader Ivan Forgac told Hina.
